Bangladesh Nationalist Party senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman on Monday issued a legal notice asking the prime minister’s political adviser HT Imam to apologies to people or him for Imam’s recent ‘false and defamatory remarks’ about him.
Tarique’s lawyer Kayser Kamal served the legal notice saying that Tarique would prosecute HT Imam if he failed to respond to the notice in two weeks.
The notice said that at a discussion on March 19, HT Imam alleged that he had information that Tarique on several occasions visited Pakistan from London to meet underworld crime boss Dawood Ibrahim being his associate.
On the following day various newspapers published HT Imam’s ‘libellous and slanderous’ remarks that tarnish Tarique’s image in society and political arena in Bangladesh and abroad as he was a leader of a major political party, said the notice.
It asked HT Imam to prove the allegation brought against Tarique or apologise to people or him in two weeks.
The notice was sent to the prime minister’s office through a registered post.
It said that Tarique Rahman was now in United Kingdom for medical treatment.
Tarique was wanted in more than 100 cases, many of which the trial court issued warrants for his arrest.
On March 7, 2015, the High Court in response to an appeal of a pro-ruling Awami League lawyer, imposed injunction on the broadcasting and publication of Tarique’s remarks in the print and electronic media and social network since he was a ‘fugitive accused.’
When asked if he could serve legal notice on behalf of Tarique, who is now a fugitive accused, Kayser Kamal replied, ‘Every individual has the rights to appoint legal representative.’
