Take steps to resolve crisis, opposition requests president

The BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance has requested President Abdul Hamid to take steps for a dialogue and understanding to resolve the prevailing political crisis.

“The president has assured us that he will try (to act in this regard) within his constitutional power,” BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir quoted the president as telling the opposition delegation in response.

Expressing optimism that the crisis would be solved through discussions, the president told the opposition leaders that he would conveyed their message to the government, according to Fakhrul.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia led the 20-member delegation during the around one-hour meeting with the president at Bangabhaban, his office-cum residence.

Earlier, the meeting began around 6:30pm and ended at around 7:30pm.
The president and his wife received the BNP chairperson as she got off her car at Bangabhaban around 6:15pm.
The motorcade of the BNP chairperson arrived in front of the Bangabhaban around 5:45pm, but she waited outside the president’s office for half an hour as she reached there early.
The opposition leaders left the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office around 5:00pm, sources at the BNP said.

BNP leaders and activists welcome Khaleda on her way to Bangabhaban. They also chanted different slogans.

The other team members include BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, its standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Jamiruddin Sircar, ASM Hannan Shah, Mirza Abbas, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan and Nazrul Islam Khan, Bangabhaban sources said.

Liberal Democratic Party Chairman Oli Ahmed, Bangladesh Jatiya Party Chairman Andaleeve Rahman Partha, Islami Oikya Jote Chairman Abdul Latif Nezami, Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer AKM Nazir Ahmed, Khelafat Majlish Ameer Muhammad Ishaq, Jatiya Ganotantrik Party Chairman Shafiul Alam Pradhan, National Peoples Party Chairman Shawkat Hossain Nilu, National Democratic Party Chairman Khandker Golam Mortuza, Bangladesh Kalyan Party Chairman Syed Mohammad Ibrahim, Bangladesh NAP Chairman Jebel Rahman and Bangladesh Labour Party Chairman Mustafizur Rahman Iran are the other members of the team.

Khaleda is expected to request the president to take steps to resolve the crisis over election-time government through talks between the ruling and the opposition parties.
The BNP chief is also likely to inform the president about her proposal about the formation of a non-party polls-time government she had made public last month.
