“You can wage anti-government agitation. But make sure people are not killed and children’s education are not hampered by your movement,” she said while receiving results of PSC and Ebtedayee exams on Monday.

Hasina said there was no ban on anti-government agitation.

But it would be unfortunate if the agitation was suicidal, if its purpose was to kill people, she said.

“Let the BNP-Jamaat agitate. But why (do they agitate) against the people? Killing people is no movement.”

The Prime Minister alleged the Opposition was hiring people at Tk 500-2000 to get them to kill people.

Hasina said she had appealed to the Opposition Leader not to call shutdown during public examinations but she was adamant.

She congratulated the students, teachers and officials on good results despite unfavourable situation.

The Prime Minister highlighted various initiatives taken by her government including ‘School Feeding Programme’ to keep children in schools.

This year, 98.58 percent and 95.8 percent students passed the Primary School Certificate and Ebtedayee exams.

Hasina asked the guardians and teachers to be friendly to the children instead of scolding them.

She recalled that the incumbent government had banned corporal punishment in schools and colleges.

The Prime Minister said if the Awami League government came to power again it would make computer education compulsory at the primary level.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid handed over the results to the Prime Minister at the Gana Bahban.

The minister said the students had to take exams amid uncertainty and violence.

He said the results were published 24 days after the last exam was over.

Schools across the country will celebrate textbook festival on Jan 2 like in previous years, Nahid said.

The Prime Minister will inaugurate the festival on Jan 1, he also said.

The minister called for gender balance in education.
