S’pore leaders send condolences to Bangladesh over death of president

SINGAPORE : The leaders of Singapore have sent condolences to Bangladesh on the death of its president, Mohammad Zillur Rahman.

Mr Rahman, 84, died in a hospital in Singapore on Wednesday after a long illness.

President Tony Tan Keng Yam said in a letter to Nazmul Hassan Papon, the son of the late Mr Rahman, that Mr Rahman was a leader who worked tirelessly throughout his life.

He said Mr Rahman will be remembered for his indomitable spirit and loyalty to Bangladesh.

Dr Tan said he met Mr Rahman in Singapore in April 2012.

Over tea at the Istana, he shared with him his perceptive views on how Singapore and Bangladesh can work together to further deepen their excellent bilateral ties.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong also extended his deepest condolences on the passing of Mr Rahman.

Mr Lee said in a letter to his counterpart Sheikh Hasina that Mr Rahman was one of Bangladesh’s pioneer leaders, who dedicated his life to his country.

He said Mr Rahman will always be remembered for his devoted service and many contributions to the people of Bangladesh.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Law K Shanmugam wrote to his counterpart Dr Dipu Moni, saying he is saddened to learn of the passing of Mr Rahman.

He said Mr Rahman served his country with humility, dignity and dedication.

He was a frequent visitor to Singapore and a firm supporter of the longstanding friendship between Singapore and Bangladesh.

Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs Masagos Zulkifli will represent Singapore at the state funeral of Mr Rahman in Dhaka from March 21 to 22.

He will be accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  1. I am so sorry to hear about your loss and I would like to offer you my condolences. I can understand your frustrations and pains in your heart with this world and why we should have hope because I used to feel the same way. But keep in mind that God is always there to keep us going and He will never leave us especially in times like this.
