News - Spl bench formed to hear writ for Hasina-Khaleda dialogue
Chief Justice M Mozammel Hossain on Monday constituted a special bench to dispose of a public interest litigation writ petition seeking its directives for a dialogue between the chiefs of two major political parties – Awami League and BNP.

The HC bench was formed comprising Justice M Nizamul Haque and Justice Jafar Ahmed following an appeal filed to the Chief Justice on Sunday. The bench is expected to hear the writ petition and pass an order in this regard on March 27 (Wednesday).

Supreme Court lawyer Dr Yunus Ali Akand, also a petitioner in this regard, filed the application to form the special bench as the duration of a vacation bench comprising the two same judges which had heard the matter expired on Thursday.

In his petition, Dr Yunus appealed to the Chief Justice to assign the same bench to dispose of the matter.

The Supreme Court lawyer filed the writ on March 14 when he also sought the court directives for prohibiting the activities of Gonajagaran Manchas across the country.

The Awami League-led 14-party alliance, the BNP-led 18-party alliance, the Election Commission and the government were made respondents to the petition.

Yunus in his petition also sought the court’s intervention asking the political parties to refrain from enforcing programmes like hartal and blockade till the disposal of the petition.

On March 19, the HC vacation bench fixed March 20 to pass an order on the public interest litigation writ petition. Later, the court re-fixed March 21 for passing orders in this regard as former BNP leader Barrister Nazmul Huda wished to hear in this regard.

As the hearing resumed on March 21, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam informed the court of the public holiday announced for the day following the death of President Zillur Rahman.

Later, the HC bench left the court asking the writ petitioner to file an appeal to the Chief Justice in this regard.
