Skincare guide for winter

After the gruelling October heat, winter comes as a soothing relief. The cool breeze and chill in the air make you feel pleasant and nice, isn’t it?

But did you know that your skin doesn’t feel the same? Winter brings harsh wind and low levels of moisture in the air which causes skin and hair problems such as dryness, itchiness, cracked heels and more. We bring a head-to-toe skincare regime for you.

Face
Your face is the most exposed area of your body and gets highly affected during winter. To keep your skin from drying, make sure you keep it moisturised always. Stay away from strong cleansers and opt for a mild face wash even if your skin is oily. Exfoliate your skin to get rid of the little flakes that form on your face. Apply a good sunscreen to protect your skin from sun and wind.

Eyes
Eyes tend to become extremely dry and feel itchy during the winter months. Using a hydrating eye drop available over-the-counter can help relieve dry and irritated eyes. Also use a good under-eye cream around the eye area to protect the delicate skin around your eyes. Keep a pair of sunglasses handy to protect your eyes from harsh winds and sun glare.

Lips
Unlike skin, your lips lack oil gland which is why they tend to get dry and chapped easily. Drinking plenty of water during the day can keep your lips hydrated. Also apply a lip balm or petroleum jelly to keep them soft and moisturised. Refrain from licking your lips as it further dries them. Also exfoliate your lips using a toothbrush gently on your lips to get rid of flaky skin. You could also apply ghee or butter on your lips before going to bed.

Hair
During winter, the atmosphere becomes dry and the moisture content in the air goes down. This can make your hair extremely dry and brittle. The best way to deal with this problem is by avoiding heat treatments on hair such as blow drying, pressing combs, perming etc. Also switch to a shampoo and conditioner which has high moisture content and don’t wash your hair too often during winter. Avoid hot showers and opt for lukewarm water baths instead. While stepping out, cover your head with a scarf or hat to safeguard it from cold air and direct sunlight. Oiling your hair once a week will help retain its natural oils and will make your hair looking shiny and healthy.

Hands & Legs
Moisturise, moisturise and moisturise! You need to use body lotion or body butter twice a day to keep your skin soft and supple. Drink plenty of water as it will keep your skin hydrated. Keep your body well covered to protect it from harsh winds. Eating green leafy vegetables and fruits also help in retaining the moisture in the skin. You could also massage your body with almond or olive oil to keep drying and itching at bay.

Feet
Cracked heels and flaky feet are a common problem during winter. You feet need special care during this season. You can start by exfoliating them once a week. Keep them moisturised at all times. Before sleeping, slather foot cream or petroleum jelly and cover them in socks. Indulge in pedicure once a month to pamper your feet.
