Sirajganj accident toll rises to 16

At least 16 people were killed while 60 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses in the west of Bangabandhu Bridge on Dhaka-Sirajganj-Rajshahi highway in Sirajganj early Sunday.
A total of 12 bodies were kept at Sirajganj General Hospital morgue while two bodies were handed over to their family members, said Faridul Islam, residential medical officer of the hospital.
Sirajganj district civil surgeon Debaprada Roy said two more bodies, including one of a pregnant woman, were kept at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital morgue in Bogra.
The pregnant woman, Maushumi Khatun (20), died on her way to the hospital while another died while undergoing treatment there.
Among the injured, 36 were now admitted to Sirajganj General Hospital and 24 others were shifted to SZMCH for better treatment, he added.
Officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Bridge west zone police station, Helal Uddin, said the accident took place at Mulibari around 5:00am when a Rangpur-bound bus of Sabir Hussain Paribahan that had started from Chittagong hit Dhaka-bound Azad Paribahan, coming from Gaibandha.
The impact of the collision left 14 people, including the driver of Azad Paribahan, dead on the spot.
Police, fire service and others took part in rescue operation.
Sirajganj deputy commissioner Md Billal Hossain, police superintendent Miraz Uddin Ahmed and civil surgeon Debaprada Roy, among others, visited the spot.
The district administration will provide Tk 10,000 to the family of each victim for carrying the body, said the DC.
The accident took place as the bus of Sabir Hussain Paribahan was running on the wrong lane, SP Miraz Uddin explained.
Police seized both the buses.
Meanwhile, a five-member committee, led by additional district magistrate Muhammad Kamrul Hasan, was formed to look into the accident.
The committee was given three working days to submit its report to the DC.
Among the victims – Minhaz Pradhan, 28, the driver of Azad Paribahan, Liton, 42, Milon, 22, Sabuj, 20, residents of Gaibandha, Zillur Rahman, 46, of Bogra, Chan Babu, 22, Biplab, 23, of Dinajpur, Maushumi Khatun, 20, Anwarul Islam, 19, Abdul Kari, 45, Mafizul Islam, Mahbub, 54, and Rustam Kari, 85, of Rangpur – were identified.
