Shibir threatens to oust Hasina

The dependence of the 18-party opposition alliance on the Shibir’s ‘street power’ was underscored by Zabbar’s speech , with which the Opposition rally at Suhrawardy Udyan started on Friday

“The student community under the leadership of Chhatra Shibir will show the way to remove Sheikh Hasina from power,” Zabbar said.

He urged the BNP chief to intensify the movement against the government, indicating that the Jamaat-Shibir combine wanted no dialogue between the two leading alliances but an uncompromising campaign to oust the Hasina government.

The rally, presided over by the BNP leader Sadeq Hossain Khoka, began at 2pm.

After a number of verses from Q’uoran were recited, Zabbar started his fiery speech.

He demanded immediate release of Shibir national President Delwar Hossain and alleged he was being tortured in custody.

“Shibir activists have given their blood and lives. They will give blood once again whenever the country needs it,” said Zabbar.

After Zabbar, BNP front leaders delievered their speeches . They included Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal President Abdul Qader Bhuiyan, Swechchashebok Dal’s General Secretary Mir Sarfat Ali Sopu and Mahila Dal’s General Secretary Shirin Sultana.

The opposition leader Khaleda Zia is expected to address the rally as chief guest to demand restoration of a neutral caretaker government.

Thousands of supporters of the 18-party alliance supporters have thronged the venue since morning.

Islami Chhatra Shibir activists were the first to reach the venue at 9am.

They were involved in a brief scuffle with BNP activists to occupy the space near the podium.
