Shibir, AL men cut each other’s tendons in Rajshahi; tension escalates

Tension escalated in the city as activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir cut the tendons of two Awami League leaders in Binodpur area of the city early Monday.

Police said a group of Chhatra Shibir men swooped on the house of Shahidul Islam Shahid, general secretary of No-30 ward Awami League city unit, while he was holding a meeting with his party men around 12:30 am.

The Shibir men stabbed Shahidul and ward Awami League member Mainul Hossain indiscriminately and cut the tendons of their hands and legs.

Ruhul Amin, a Jubo League leader, was also injured in their attack as he tried to save them.

The injured were taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital while Shahidul was sent to Dhaka Pangu Hospital as his condition was stated to be critical.

In retaliation, the activists of Awami League and Jubo League stormed into the house of Muktar Hossain, an activist of Jamaat-e-Islami on the outskirts of the city, and cut the tendons of his legs.

They also cut the tendons of Ayesha Begum, wife of Muktar Hossain, and her fingers at about 4:30 am. The injured were admitted to Naudapara Islami Hospital.

Earlier, the Awami League and Jubo League activists vandalised an Islami Bank branch at New Market in the city around 1:30 am.

Asit Kumar Ghosh, officer-in-charge of Matihar Police Station, said a manhunt was launched to arrest the offenders.
