Sheikh Jamal first Bangladeshi club to lift King’s Cup in Bhutan

JAMAL-1

They have become the first Bangladeshi outfit to win the regional competition after the heartbreak in the tiebreaker they had to endure in the final of the IFA Shield in Kolkata earlier this year.

Yasin Khan headed home the winner in the 25th minute from a Wedson Anselme corner at the Changlimithang Stadium in Thimpu on Tuesday.

Midfielder Jamal Bhuiyan was sent off in the injury time of the second half but Maruful Haq’s side held on to the lead for their second overseas title.

The Bangladesh Premier League champions, who won the Safal Pokhara Gold Cup in Nepal back in 2011, put up a dominating display throughout the tournament.

It started with the win against Bhutan’s domestic league champions Druk United in the first match.

They drew with Thailand’s Nakhon Ratchasima in the next match but went on to thrash India giants Mohun Bagan 5-3 to move into the semifinals as group champions.

The Dhanmondi outfit beat the Nepalese champions Manang Marshyangdi 2-1 on way to the final.
