Shakib fastest to 5k runs, 200-wicket double

When he ran Dwaine Pretorius down to third man and reached 17 off his 28 th delivery in the 20 th over of the first ODI against South Africa, top-ranked Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan became the fastest player to reach the double of 5,000 ODI runs and 200 ODI wickets. With 224 wickets, Shakib is just the fifth player in ODI history to achieve the mark. He reached the mark in 178 matches and in 168 innings. Shakib had also reached the 200-wicket mark against South Africa in Chittagong in June 2015.

The players who reached the milestone before him are a who’s who of limited-overs giants: Sanath Jayasuriya (13,340 runs and 323 wickets), Jacques Kallis (11,579 runs and 273 wickets), Shahid Afridi (8,064 runs and 395 wickets) and Abdur Razzak (5,080 runs and 269 wickets).

Shakib is now also the Bangladesh batsman to go past 5,000 ODI runs during the ongoing first ODI against South Africa at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley when he reached 17. Opener Tamim Iqbal, sitting out this match due to a thigh muscle tear, was the first Bangladesh batsman to reach that mark in October 2016 during the third ODI against England in Chittagong.  Shakib has taken 168 innings, while Tamim did it in 10 innings fewer.

Where Shakib beats Tamim, at the point of reaching their respective landmarks, is in the average and strike rate stakes. At the end of the innings that took him past 5,000, Tamim averaged 32.4 and had a strike rate of 78.1. Before Shakib, who has 24 unbeaten innings to Tamim’s three, started the current innings he averaged 34.84 and had a strike rate of 81.16.

Like Tamim, Shakib’s most productive opponents have been Zimbabwe against whom he has scored 1316 runs from 43 matches. He has scored more than 500 against three othere: New Zealand (575 in 21 matches), Sri Lanka (532 in 18 matches) and India (508 in 16 matches).

Shakib has scored just over half his runs in Bangladesh, having totalled 2519 runs in 91 matches at an average of 35.98.

Mushfiqur Rahim , the man batting with Shakib when he crossed the landmark, is next in line to cross the 5,000-run mark as he is currently on 4404 ODI runs.
