Shahbagh protest democratic movement: Mozena

Jessore, Feb 12: Dan W Mozena, US ambassador to Bangladesh, said in a press briefing on Tuesday at the American Corner at Jessore Public Library, that he hoped the next polls will be free, fair and accountable. He expects all the political parties to take part in the election after a fruitful negotiation between the ruling party and the opposition. He also expressed hope that the international crimes trial should be fair, transparent and accountable following the international standard.

Mozena termed the mass protest of Shahbagh as a democratic movement.He added saying that the US wants trial of those who committed crimes during the war of liberation. “Basic democratic rights should be upheld”, he added in this regard.

The ambassador also briefed the journalists about his Jessore–Satkhira tour in the morning. He was accompanied by his wife and Richard Green mission director USAID.  He described his visit as wonderful, “I saw the same magic everywhere in Bangladesh”, he added.

The ambassador hoped that Bangladesh would be the next Asian tiger.

He informed the journalists that USAID spent US $ 50 million in the field of food security in Bangladesh in 2012.

He predicted that Bangladesh will be a flower-exporting country in the future.

Mozena praised Bangladeshis for their initiatives in protesting against human trafficking and their hard labour in floriculture, fisheries, agriculture and other sectors.

US ambassador on Monday visited Gadkhali flower farms, Benapole land port and various fish projects and tiles factories in Satkhira.
