Shafiul murder: Islamia College principal held

The principal was detained from Binodpur area, says RMP Commissioner

Shafiul-Islam

Police have held a local college principal along with 19 others over the killing of Rajshahi University Professor Dr AKM Shafiul Islam.

Humayun Ahmed, principal of Islamia College located at Jamaat stronghold Binodpur of the city, and others were nabbed on Sunday.

The principal was detained from Binodpur area, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mahbubur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune.

However, the police commissioner did not disclose the identities of the other detainees.

Rajshahi University Professor Shafiul Islam was hacked to death outside his house in the Chauddapai area of Rajshahi city on Saturday afternoon. He died several hours later while undergoing treatment.

A Facebook page, apparently representing an unknown militant group, has claimed the responsibility of killing Shafiul.

Professor Shafiul had a longstanding suspicion that Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir men might assault him physically. The professor who has always been vocal against Jamaat-Shibir’s activities on campus, shared his notion several times over the last eight years with his family members, relatives and close associates, one of his relatives told the Dhaka Tribune.

Shafiul is not the only teacher of the university who was killed. On December 24, 2004, Dr Md Yunus, a professor of economics, was hacked to death while jogging in the Binodpur area near the campus.

On February 1, 2006, Professor S Taher of the Department of Geology and Mining went missing from his residence in the teachers’ quarters. His body was found in a sewer outside his residence two days later.
