An Islami Chhatra Shibir leader was killed when police chased a group of pickets at Jatrabari in the capital during hartal hours Wednesday morning, police said.

A cameraman of private television channel Banglavision also sustained injuries during the incident that took place around 7:00am.

Deceased Khalilur Rahman, 20, was president of a ward unit of Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.

Khalilur was an honours first year student of Bangladesh Islami University and son of Abdul Baten of Santhiya upazila in Pabna.

Nearly 20 Shibir men brought out a procession near Bright School and College on Dania Road in Jatrabari and started to vandalise vehicles, said Mazharul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kadamtoli Police Station.

The Shibir men also exploded several cocktails there, the policeman said.

At one stage, police chased the pro-hartal activists.

While fleeing the scene, one of the Shibir activists fell on the road and sustained severe injuries in the head, the OC said.

He was rushed to Mitford Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, the OC added.

Meanwhile, Selina Akhtar, an eye witness of the incident, claimed that police opened fire on the Shibir men when they brought out a procession there.

At one stage of the firing, a Shibir man fell on the ground, she added.

Hashi Begum, who also claimed to have witnessed the incident, told The Daily Star that the Shibir man died as police opened fire on their procession.

Both the witnesses however rejected police claim that the Shibir men resorted to vandalism and blasted cocktails.

Meanwhile, Adabar police rounded up a picket while he hurled a cocktail targeting a bus around 8:30am at Shyamoli Ring Road in the city.
