Salaries of president, PM, ministers, MPs, SC judges almost doubled

The cabinet on Monday approved at least six proposals raising the monthly salaries and perks of all those holding constitutional positions from the President to Members of Parliament by over 91 per cent on an average.
‘As per the proposals, the president’s salary would be increased to Tk 1.20 lakh from Tk 61,200 and that of the prime minister to Tk 1.15 lakh from Tk 58,600 while the salary of a minister would rise to Tk 1.05 lakh from Tk 53,100,’ cabinet secretary Muhammad Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told a press briefing after the 81st cabinet meeting held at the secretariat.
The salary of the speaker would be raised to Tk 1.12 lakh from Tk 57,200 and that of the chief justice to Tk 1.10 lakh from Tk 56,000, he said.
Salary of deputy speaker would be raised to Tk 1.05 lakh from Tk 53,100 and salaries of Appellate Division judges would rise to Tk 1.05 from Tk 53,100 and of High Court Division judges to Tk 95,000 from Tk 49,000 as mentioned in the proposals.
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the weekly meeting of the cabinet.
The salary of the top civil bureaucrat (cabinet secretary) has been increased by 91.11 per cent and so the salaries of the president, the prime minister and others were also revised in keeping with the pay hike for the public servants, Musharraf said.
main02The increased pays would come into effect from July 1, 2015, but the new allowances would be effective from July 1 next year.
The cabinet secretary said traditionally the salaries and allowances of all those holding constitutional positions including the president, the prime minister, the speaker and the chief justice were revised immediately after the pay hikes of the public servants.
The move came weeks after the government had almost doubled the pays for around 14 lakh civil servants of the country.
The Cabinet Division placed the drafts in the cabinet meeting seeking necessary amendments to the President’s (Remuneration and Privileges) Act, the Prime Minister’s (Remuneration and Privileges) Act, Ministers and Ministers of State and Deputy Ministers (Remuneration and Privileges) Act while the legislative and parliamentary affairs division sought amendments to the Speaker and Deputy Speaker’s (Remuneration and Privileges) Act, Members of Parliament (Remuneration and Allowances) Act, and Supreme Court Judges (Remuneration and Privileges) Act for increases in their salaries and allowances.
The salary of the leader of the opposition in the House would rise to Tk 1.05 lakh from Tk53,100, that of the chief whip to Tk1.05 lakh from Tk 53,100 and that of state minister to Tk 92,000 from Tk47,800 while the salary of the deputy leader of the House to Tk 92,000 from Tk 47,800.
In the revised pay structures, the monthly salary of a whip would be increased to Tk 92,000 from Tk 47,800, that of deputy minister to Tk 86,500 from Tk 45,150 and of a Member of Parliament to Tk 55,000 from Tk 27,500.
The daily travel allowance of the prime minister has been increased to Tk 3,000 from Tk 1,000, that of speaker to Tk 2,500 from Tk 1,000, of minister, deputy speaker and state minister to Tk 2,000 from Tk,750 while the daily allowance of the Member of Parliament will rise to Tk 750 from Tk 300, according to the proposals.
The cabinet on September 7 approved the new pay structure raising the maximum monthly salary of a public servant to Tk 86,000 from Tk 45,000 and the lowest basic pay to Tk 8,250 from Tk 4,100 with effect from July 1, 2015.
The cabinet secretary said that the finance ministry was still working on issuance of a gazette notification on the pay hike.
It usually takes a month or more for the issuance of gazette notification on the salary hike after the proposals are approved by the cabinet, he added.
