Ruling party scared of Tarique’s popularity: Rafiqul

News - Ruling party scared of Tarique’s popularity: Rafiqul
BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah on Wednesday said the ruling party leaders, including ministers and MPs, are scared of BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman because of his popularity.

“They’ve got panicked of Tarique as he has won the hearts of the country’s people,” said the BNP leader addressing a rally, organised by Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum, at the South Hall of the Supreme Court.

Prior to the rally, pro-opposition lawyers brought out a procession on the Supreme Court premises in support of today’s daylong hartal, enforced by the BNP-led 18-party alliance.

Referring to the Money Laundering case against Tarique, Rafiqul alleged that huge money had been siphoned off the country since this government assumed office as reports of foreign intelligence agencies suggest. “Those involved in the money laundering will be brought to justice in the future”.

About the ban on holding meetings and rallies, the former minister described it as violation of the constitution. “Those responsible for the killing of democracy will also be brought to justice in the future.”

“The government has so far withdrawn 7,103 cases filed against the ruling party men, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, while it is filing new cases against opposition leaders and activists,” he said.

Supreme Court Bar general secretary Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, advocate Nitai Roy Chowdhury and Abed Raja, among others, spoke at the rally.
