‘Rule of dictator sans uniform’

Fakhrul said this as a rejoinder on Monday to a remark by the ruling Awami League (AL) General Secretary and LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam.

Ashraf had earlier said, “Criticism of the budget does not befit those in uniform.”

“I would like to tell Mr Asraf we had witnessed uniformed autocracy. Now we see a similar regime without the uniform,” the BNP spokesperson said at a discussion.

Ashraf had alluded to BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s term while replying to BNP’s criticism of the budget proposals.

“Criticism does not suit those who had placed the budget in Parliament wearing the uniform,” he said.

Fakhrul referred to the opposition Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad’s military rule.

He also mentioned AL’s term in the post-independent era.

He said one-party rule was introduced in the country though the fourth amendment, passed in only 11 minutes in parliament in 1975.

The country is now run by one-party rule through the 15th amendment to the Constitution, Fakhrul said.

He asked freedom fighters to unit to ‘revive’ democracy.

The BNP leader reiterated the demand for disbanding RAB following alleged involvement of some personnel of the elite police unit in the multiple murders in Narayanganj.

Flaying the prime minister’s promise to stand by the Osman family in Narayanganj, Fakhrul said, “Everybody knows who the godfather of Narayanganj is. When the prime minister of a country speaks in favour of an identified godfather, can there be any justice?”

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her speech recalled the contributions of the Osmans, a long line of politicians from Narayanganj, to Awami League from the party’s very inception, and promised to stay by their side.

Fingers are being pointed at Awami League MP and Nasim’s brother Shamim Osman since the leaking of a phone conversation between him and the Narayanganj seven-murder prime suspect Nur Hossain.
