Rivalries within AL lead to Phulgazi chairman’s murder: BNP

The BNP has claimed killing of Ekramul Haque, chairman of Feni’s Phulgazi Upazila, is a result of internal feud within Awami League.

The party’s acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the government was trying to derive political mileage out of the murder.

“The Prime Minister’s office released a statement right after the murder blaming a particular man for it without any investigation. The murder is now being used for political purpose,” he said at a press briefing at BNP’s Naya Paltan offices on Wednesday.

He demanded that the government stop accusing the BNP for the murder and instead launch a neutral investigation.

Leaders of the ruling party accused local BNP members of killing the chairman at Feni Sadar on Tuesday.

Phulgazi BNP leader Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, who lost to Haque in the local body election few months ago, was named as prime accused in the case filed over the chairman’s murder.

Haque was killed in his SUV after it was stopped by a group of armed assailants in front of Bilashi Cinema Hall. The assailants opened fire on the vehicle and set it on fire.

“This murder is the result of rivalries within the ruling party. This is clear from the reports published in all news dailies today,” said Fakhrul.

“Ekram was a member of Joynal Hazari’s steering committee. That is when Feni was besieged by terror. He was an enemy of Feni Sadar MP Nizamuddin Hazari. This is what newspapers reported.”

He said the case against BNP leader Mahtab was ‘nonsense’.

“BNP leaders are chased away from their areas by the government. How can they get involved in something like this, not even a crazy person will believe this!”
