Rifat murder: Arrested angry not seeing MP’s son on accused list

The accused showed their reactions seeing the newsmen while being taken from the court to the prison on Tuesday afternoon.

Police produced 14 accused before the court of Barguna’s senior judicial judge Sirajul Islam Gazi in the morning. Later, they talked addressing the relatives and the newsmen while police was forcing them to enter the prison van.

The accused alleged what is being done with them is illegal. Sunam Debnath gave orders to kill Rifat Sharif. Why he has not been made accused in the case, they asked.

Sunam Debnath is the science and technology affairs secretary of Barguna district unit Awami League and also son of Barguna-1 MP Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu.

Sunam Debnath called this a conspiracy against his family and him.

“This is a conspiracy against me and my family. Our political opponents are involved with this. Has my name come up in any confessional statement given under the section 164? Did any accused take my name during interrogation on remand? Do you understand the gravity of this conspiracy against me?” he told newsmen.

Sunam further said, “Two main accused in the case are sons of Zila Parishad chairman Delwar Hossain’s brother-in-law. They are our political opponents.”

Meanwhile, the court sent six of the 14 accused to Juvenile Correction Centre in Jashore and fixed 18 September as the next date of hearing.

Defence lawyer Mahbubul Bari said the six accused sent to Juvenile Correction Centre are — Rishan Farazi, Tanvir, Chandan, Oli Ullah, Nazmul and Aryan.
