Report: Formaldehyde meter not fit for testing fruits

The machine can indicate wrong information about the presence of formalin, says report

Bangladesh Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) has found that the formalin detector machine ‘Formaldehyde Meter Z-300’ was not “appropriate” for testing fruits.

In line with the High Court order, the BCSIR made the disclosure at a report submitted to the registrar’s office of the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

According to the report, the ‘Formaldehyde Meter Z-300’ can detect the presence of formaldehyde gas in the air

“The machine can show the presence of formalin even in fresh fruits in warm weather,” said the report.

“The machine can indicate wrong information about the presence of formalin.”

Upon receiving a copy of the report, Advocate Manzill Murshid confirmed the Dhaka Tribune about the BCSIR findings.

Earlier on July 9, Manzill Murshid filed a writ petition before the High Court seeking its directives on the government to examine the fitness of the ‘Formaldehyde Meter Z-300.’

On July 21, an HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice Md Habibul Gani ordered the government to conduct laboratory tests of the formalin detector machine ‘Formaldehyde Meter Z-300’.

Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institute (BSTI), Bangladesh Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) and National Food Safety Laboratory have been asked to submit the reports after examining the test within four weeks.

The BSTI is yet to submit any report in this regard.
