Ramu attack ‘plotter’ held in Cox’s Bazar

Police on Thursday arrested an alleged Rohingya terrorist, one of the connivers of attacks on Buddhists in Ramu and Ukhia last year.

The arrestee was identified as Hafez Sanaul Islam, 50, one of the perpetrators of Ramu attacks and chief coordinator of the military wing of Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO), a militant outfit.

Acting on a tip-off that Hafez Sanaul, a most wanted Rohingya terrorist in the list of Cox`s Bazar police, was holding a clandestine meeting at Hila Darus Sunnah Madrasah in Teknaf upazila, police raided the madrasah at 5pm and arrested him, said Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of the district Babul Akter.

He Sanaul, son of late Nizam Uddin of Mangdu town of Myanmar, sneaked into Bangladesh in 1978 and joined the Rohingya outfit. Soon he got involved with a syndicate of international crimes and has been providing money and manpower to local and foreign terrorist organisations for a long time.

Sanaul was one of the perpetrators of a series of arson attacks on monasteries and Buddhist villages in Ramu, Teknaf and Ukhia of Cox`s Bazar in September in 2012, the ASP said.

He also allegedly financed the terrorism unleashed in the district by Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir recently.

Sanaul is being interrogated by detectives will be produced before court.
