Rampal plant to serve another country’s interest: BNP

Rampal-Project

Opposition BNP on Monday alleged that the government is setting up the controversial coal-based Rampal Power plant to protect the interest of another country.

“The Prime Minster laid the foundation stone of Rampal Power plant ignoring the opinions of experts and without any proper assessment of the project as she can sacrifice the country’s interest for her personal gain and protect the interest of another country,” said BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

The BNP leader came up with the allegation at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.

Earlier on October 5, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina along with her Indian counterpart Dr Manmohan Singh jointly inaugurated the Bangladesh-India Power Transmission Centre through a videoconferencing and laid the foundation stone of Maitree Super Thermal Power Project (Rampal 1320 MW coal-based power plant).

Hasina also unveiled the plaque of the foundation stone of 360MW combined cycle power plant.

Rizvi criticised the Prime Minister for her remark that a gentle wind of peace is blowing across the country and said her claim is not accurate.

“It’s become a habit of the ruling party to resort to killing and repression of its opponents. Opposition leaders and activists are being gunned down almost every day,” he claimed.

Rizvi strongly condemned and protested the recent attack on a BNP rally reportedly by the ruling party men at Modhupur in Tangail.

BNP chairperson’s adviser advocate Ahmed Azam Khan, assistant office secretary Abdul Latif Jony and Jubo Dal leader Abdus Salam Azad were, among others, present.
