Ramadan to begin Thursday

Holy Ramadan, the lunar month of self-purification through fasting and abstinence, will begin on Thursday as the new moon was not sighted anywhere in Bangladesh sky on Tuesday.

Lailatul Qadr, the night of divine blessing and benediction, will be observed on the night of August 5.

The National Moon Sighting Committee took the decision in a meeting held at the Baitul Mukarram Islamic Foundation on Tuesday evening after reviewing reports on moon sighting for the holy month of Ramadan.

Chairman of the committee and State Minister for Religious Affairs M Shahjahan Mia presided over the meeting.

Religious Affairs Secretary Kazi Habibul Awal and Director General of the Islamic Foundation Shamim Mohammad Afjal, among others, attended the meeting.
