Rain plays havoc in city

Heavy rains drenched the capital for the second consecutive day on Saturday causing immense sufferings to the commuters.

The torrential rains inundated many areas in the capital, including Mouchak, Malibagh, Moghbazar, Shantinagar, Badda, Baridhara, Natun Bazar, Mirpur and Mohammadpur, disrupting traffic on many roads.

City roads and different lanes in the low-lying areas went under knee-deep water as clogged drains failed to remove water.

Many commuters were also seen crossing the road wading through rainwater. Many of them complained that rickshaws and CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers charged them excessive fares, taking advantage of the inclement weather.

Talking to the UNB, some city dwellers said many roads go under water even after moderate rainfall due to poor drainage system and lack of renovation work.

Admitting the fact, Dhaka North City Corporation administrator Akter Hossain Bhuiyan said they will start work to remove the city’s water-logging problem.

Sanaul Haque, an official at the Met Office, said it rained 117 mm in the capital in the last 27 hours from 12 pm on Friday to 3pm on Saturday.

The Met Office forecast that the rainfall is likely to for 2-3 days more.

  1. Water logging in Dhaka city,s some areas are not unusual. In the past incessant rainfall over a week could cause water logging for some times but now a days just few hours rain causes water logging on the street. One reason I find that new buildings are coming up with higher elevation of the ground floor.. As result , the street becomes water passage /channel. Roof top rainwater is also coming on the street. Based on meteorological data of max. total precipitation over a period and distance to be covered over a reasonable time length should be used in determining the design and capacity of the rain water drainage system. It is also important to maintain appropriate gradient of the slope of the drain. I hope necessary care in execution of the drainage system may be taken.
