RAB’s decision ‘strategic’: Asaduzzaman

State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan on Tuesday termed ‘strategic’ the decision of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) not to search any person or vehicle setting up check post and not to conduct patrolling.

He also said that the government would use the elite crime-busting force whenever it feels the necessity.

The junior home minister said this while briefing reporters after a meeting on security measures ahead of Ramadan at the Home Ministry on Tuesday.

The RAB on Monday night said that it deciding to stay away from tasks outside its charter of duties.

Asaduzzaman on Tuesday assured the city dwellers that they would celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr in a peaceful manner as in the past.

“Strict security measures have been taken to prevent extortion, mugging and other crimes during the month of Ramadan,” he said.

Closed-circuit cameras would be installed in every shopping mall, shopping centre and market in the capital to check the incident of robbery, extortion and other crimes, the junior minister added.

About supply of essential commodities as well as possible price hike, Asaduzzaman said he has accurate information that the supply of essentials would remain sufficient and there is no possibility of any price hike during the month of fasting.

The Commerce Ministry will monitor the market condition and conduct anti-adulteration drives in the capital during Ramadan, he said.

About the plying of slow-speed vehicles like Nasiman, Kariman and Bhatbhati, the state minister said those vehicles have already been banned on highways and measures have been taken so that those are not plying on the highways.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hasan Mahmud Khandker, RAB Director General Mukhlesur Rahman, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Benazir Ahmed, senior officers of different law enforcement and intelligence agencies, and representatives of FBCCI and other offices concerned were present at the meeting.

RAB DG Mukhlesur Rahman said that the RAB would conduct petrol duty in the Kamalapur Railway Station, bus terminals and other places during the holy months of Ramadan and Eid celebrations.
