RAB men arrested for ‘attempt to snatch land’

Uttarkhan Police Station OC Younus Ali said there were disputes over ownership of the land in the capital’s Uttarkhan.

Locals caught the five and handed them to police when the land owners were attacked on Sunday.

The arrests come amid the elite police unit’s announcement that it would no longer carry out operations other than its primary objectives.

“The locals cordoned off the attackers and informed the police,” OC Ali told bdnews24.com.

Police, however, did not divulge the identities of the arrested RAB personnel and the elite police unit is yet to say anything about the arrests.

The crime-busting unit has been widely criticised for violating human rights and extrajudicial killings in ‘crossfires’.

More recently, the alleged involvement of its officers with the abduction and killing of seven men in Narayanganj in April prompted calls for disbanding the outfit altogether.

Around 2,000 of its members have been penalised in the last 10 years, most of whom came from the military.
