Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said the BNP’s stature and standing as a political party is at an all time low, and the party is gradually making itself irrelevant just like the Muslim League.

He made the comment while speaking to reporters at Mawa area of Munshiganj on Friday.

Earlier the same day, Quader inspected construction progress of the Padma Bridge Project in Mawa, and preparations undertaken for the scheduled visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina next Sunday.

Speaking about the progress of Padma Bridge Project, Quader said: “A total of five spans (superstructure) have been installed on the Janjira Point of Padma Bridge. According to experts, this river is even more unpredictable than the Amazon.

“On the occasion of the prime minister’s imminent visit, a span has been installed on the 4th and 5thpillar at the Mawa point. The bridge is the brainchild of Sheikh Hasina, and she alone took the initiative for making the project a reality.”

He continued: “People have contributed their land to this project, and the bridge is gradually becoming visible from the banks of Padma. A six-lane expressway project is underway in the Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga route.

“The army is supervising the construction of the flyover, bridge and underpasses. Around 70% work has been completed, while rest is progressing on schedule.”

Adding that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inspect the construction progress of the 55km highway during her upcoming Mawa visit, Quader added that she will also formally inaugurate the 1,300-metre river training project.

Sheikh Hasina is also scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the rail link project.

During Obaidul Quader’s visit, Commander of 99 Composite Brigade, Brig Gen Mohammad Masudur Rahman, and Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project Director Shafiqul Islam were present among other officials.
