Qawmi madrasahs not under govt control: Hasina

The country’s qawmi madrasahs are not under the control of the government, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told Parliament on Wednesday.

“These madrasahs are run with their own rules and regulations,” she said while responding to a tabled question from Mohibur Rahman Manik (Sunamganj-5) during the PM’s question-answer session.

She said there had been no initiative in the past to bring the qawmi madrasahs under the country’s mainstream education system.

In the education policy 2010, the Prime Minister mentioned, it was stated that there will be ‘Qawmi Madrasah Education Policy’ comprising people involved in this education management. It also mentioned that this Commission will make recommendations for bringing Islamic education under this system and submit it to the Ministry of Education.

“The present government formed a Commission in this regard and this Commission has submitted its draft Qawmi Education Policy 2012 to the Education Ministry,’ she said.

It is under government’s consideration for taking further steps after scrutinising the draft Qawmi Education Policy, she added.
