Protests erupt against Home Economics agitations

Home Economics students have blocked the New Market intersection for a fourth day and continued to demonstrate for the recognition of their college as an Institute of Dhaka University.

Around 500 students of Dhaka University are holding a human chain protest inside their campus, several hundred yards away from the Home Economics students’ demonstration. The students say the protests at the New Market thoroughfare are causing public sufferings.

Meanwhile, traders of Gausia and Dhanmondi Hawkers’ Market have taken out a procession and demonstrating nearby the protests by Home Economics students.

They say they agitations which started from Monday have affected businesses adversely in and around the area.

The demonstrations have created a traffic gridlock in and around the area.

Vehicular movement has been suspended on the roads to Azimpur, Mirpur, New Paltan Line and Dhaka University as well as the National Press Club, Shahbagh and Dhanmondi.

Additional police forces have been deployed in the area with Home Economics students holding their ‘grand rally’ at the thoroughfare as they announced on Wednesday.
