Dhaka, Mar 22 (UNB) – President Zillur Rahman, the country’s 19th president, was laid to eternal rest at the Banani Graveyard on Friday afternoon.

Zillur, a charismatic politician and hero of country’s independence and Language Movement, was buried with full state honour around 3:52 pm at the grave of his wife, Ivy Rahman.

Family members, acting president Abdul Hamid, cabinet members, MPs, the Chief Justice, chiefs of the three services, politicians and freedom fighters, among others, attended the burial.

On the arrival of his body on the graveyard premises at about 3:30 pm, Zillur’s life sketch was read out before the people who gathered to take part in the burial.

After a gun salute, a two-minute silence from 3:48-3:50 was observed showing respect to the late president who died on Wednesday in Singapore while undergoing treatment.

Earlier, Zillur’s body was brought to his Gulshan residence after his second and final namaz-e-janaza at the National Eidgah in the capital.

Thousands of people from all strata, including acting president Abdul Hamid, cabinet members, MPs, the Chief Justice, chiefs of the three services, politicians and freedom fighters, took part in the janaza.

The Khatib of national mosque Baitul Mukkaram, Prof M Salahuddin conducted the Janaza.

Later, the body was taken to the president’s family residence Ivy Tower in Gulshan around 3 pm and kept there for about five minutes.

The mortal remains of the President was brought back to the capital from Bhairab after his first namaj-e-janaza at Haji Asmat College ground at Bhairab in Kishoreganj on Friday morning.

A helicopter of Air Force carrying the President’s body left Bhairb at 10:45 am and landed at the Old Airport at Tejgaon at 11:10 am

Meanwhile, a three-day national mourning is being observed at the death of the President from Thursday. The national flag is flying half-mast atop government and semi-government offices across the country and Bangladesh missions abroad.
