Pro-hartal activists torch a bus on the Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue in Karwan Bazar in the capital on Tuesday. At least six vehicles were set to fire ahead of opposition alliance countrywide shutdown on May 8 and 9.

Miscreants set fire to three vehicles and vandalised as many in the capital on the eve of a two-day hartal from Wednesday called by the BNP-led opposition alliance.

Five cocktails went off in Mohakhali area on Tuesday evening.

Miscreants torched a microbus at Bijoynagar intersection in front of the Scout Bhaban around 5:45pm. The arson took place minutes after a gayebana janaza arranged by the BNP and its allies at Paltan.

A Motijheel-bound bus from Gulshan was torched around 6:15pm in Karwan Bazar while unidentified people set fire to a private car parked in front of Tejgaon colony area around 6:00am.

A group of unidentified youths blasted five cocktails and vandalised three vehicles in front of Brac University in Mohakhali around 4:00pm, said Bhuiyan Mahbub Hassan, officer-in-charge of Banani Police Station.

The BNP-led 18-party alliance called the shutdown protesting the killings during and after Hefajat-e Islam’s Dhaka siege programme on Sunday.

However, there will be a 12-hour break in the hartal from 6:00pm tomorrow to 6:00am on Thursday with the shutdown ending in the evening that day.
