Consumers will be charged the new price from this month.

Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) announced the decision on Thursday after holding a public hearing on the matter last week.

Bangladesh’s main opposition party, the BNP, and other Leftist parties have been opposing the move.

Electricity price was increased at bulk and retail levels 11 times during Awami League’s last term.

The last hike took place in September 2012. During that time retail prices were increased by 15 percent and bulk prices by 17 percent.

BERC Chairman AR Khan said the hike will not affect those who use up to 50 units domestically. Price of power used for irrigation will also not increase.
