Armed clashes at RU expose teachers coaching business
By Faisal Rahim: http://www.weeklyholiday.net.07.02.2014.The Rajshahi University incident in which over 100 students and eight journalists were wounded on January 2 as armed Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men and police fired on general students is just the tips of the iceberg. What came out from the incident is the heinous attempt by the ruling party backed teachers supported by BCL men and local police to turn the university into a virtual private coaching centre to make extra money by opening private evening courses to irregular candidates. The incident further shows how the politicization process which is at work at different public universities is poised to destroy public institutions ignoring existing laws and standard practice. It further showed that teachers and students don’t share any more the common academic ground in which teachers are committed to teach and students to acquire knowledge. Teachers now treat students as adversaries in many cases on the way to making illegal money on the campus using the university facilities like class rooms, its furniture, electricity and other facilities.
Introduced 7 private courses . Students said teachers have introduced seven such private courses last month under the social science faculty while they are already running two such courses since 2010. They alleged that teachers who are promoting these courses often drop their regular classes to take rest and prepare for the evening shift thus depriving them from proper academic attention. These courses are also fraught with financial irregularities and breach of university discipline. In fact, teachers are engaging in selling university certificates to the evening class students whether or not they properly take the classes, pass examinations and qualify for the certificates. The other issue which was agitating the general students was the fees hike for regular academic sessions, examinations and such services. The university has imposed the new fee structure without taking the students into confidence. Students said poor students study at public universities and it will seriously jeopardize many students’ career.
The most interesting part of the episode is that when the varsity authority raised the fees to overcome the university’s budgetary deficit, they were working on new private courses to beef up the financial benefits of the ruling party supported teachers. The daily Prothom Alo ran a story last week to expose the extent of politicization of the public universities which the ruling party backed teachers now think as their personal fiefdom to exploit it by undermining academic foundation and their discipline as the nation’s highest seat of learning. Professor Sirajul Islam Chowdhury has also made the point last week in a news paper interview. The last week’s Rajshahi University incident broke out as the outcome of such politicization process in which making extra financial benefits for ruling party backed teachers was the main cause. It appears that BCL leaders were part of the beneficiaries.
Protesting RU’s actions- When the agitation of the students picked up momentum on the campus early this month closing the academic buildings to protest the university authority’s indiscriminate actions ignoring their impacts on general students, the Vice Chancellor and his inner circles decided to act. Students alleged that the RU authority called in BCL men to disperse the agitating students who were holding rallies over the past several days. They landed on the campus equipped with fire arms and sharp weapons. BCL men and police jointly swooped on the students leaving over hundred of them wounded. Of the injured, 27 were hit by bullets to turn the campus into a battlefield. Many female students were also injured and admitted to local hospital for treatment. The authority immediately announced the closure of the university for an indefinite period and students were asked to vacate the halls on the next Monday morning. Thus an academic institution halted its academic activities to protect the interest of the vested interest group of teachers working under the political patronization of the government.
BCL men blasted cocktails and started brandishing firearms, with a large contingent of police at first standing by them. As the students ran for life, police fired rubber bullets and teargas shells, leaving around 30 wounded. Later police and BCL men reportedly fired on students jointly leaving about 50 more injured. BCL activists from other city institutions joined the actions on unarmed students giving the impression of an unfolding action in a thrill movie as TV stations telecast the views suggested. Besides, they immediately put blames on the Shibir men, the students’ wing of Jamaat-e-Islami for the bloody incident. They had mingled with general students and attempted to create the unstable situation, they alleged. Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid reaffirmed the allegation of the BCL men saying Shibir men were at work and nobody would be spared. Prime Minister Hasina also defended BCL men saying they had acted to defend themselves. She said culprits would be punished.
Left students led agitation- Police have reportedly filed four cases so far but none of the BCL men who showed up brandishing fire arms and firing on students was named in those cases. Instead, the Shibir men have been targeted, although news reports said the protest movement was basically held under the leadership of left wing students and all students including students sympathetic to BCL were participating in it. RU students’ adviser meanwhile said, the peaceful movement turned violent due to the involvement of Shibir cadres. Metropolitan Police also said, there were chances of bloodshed if police did not disperse the clashing groups by opening fire. One of the senior officers said he saw none of the BCL men brandishing arms. News reports said police on Tuesday arrested a vice-president of BCL unit of RU in connection with the violence on the campus.
