‘PM’s remarks will not influence August 21 trial’

Sheikh Hasina has called the Zia family a “Killer family”

Law Minister Anisul Haq said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s remarks over the involvement of the BNP chief and her elder son with the August 21 grenade attack on the Awami League rally, would not influence the ongoing trial.

The law minister made the statement while talking to journalists after attending a programme titled “Asian Society of International Law and Regional Conference” at a city hotel on Saturday afternoon.

He said: “She made the remarks, considering the massive impact of the attack that claimed the lives of 24 leaders and activists of the Awami League. She talked about the in-activeness of the then BNP government.”

“The then BNP government did not take sufficient steps to capture the real culprits behind the attack and to bring them under trial. She made the comment, considering the BNP’s role.”

Denying the BNP’s claim that the PM’s remarks on the issue would influence the trial of the August 21 grenade attack case, the minister further said: “But, the remarks will not influence the ongoing trail process.”

Challenging Khaleda and her son to prove themselves innocent, he said: “They would face the trial if they were not guilty.”

Earlier on Thursday, the premier alleged that Late president Ziaur Rahman was involved in the August 15, 1975 assassination while Khaleda Zia, her son Tarique Rahman and her cabinet members were directly involved in the August 21 incident.

She called the Zia family a “Killer family.”

Later on Friday, while expressing reactions, the BNP claimed that “such remarks of the PM will influence the trial of the case.”
