Dhaka, Mar 20 (UNB) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of President Mohammed Zillur Rahman.

In an instant reaction, the Prime Minister said the demise of Bangladesh’s most elderly politician, Zillur Rahman, is an irreparable loss to the country and its people.

In her condolence message, the Prime Minister said people will ever remember his contributions to every stage of the nation since its emergence in 1971.

Zillaur Rahman, a close associate of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was the guardian of the Awami League and the nation during crucial times.

The Prime Minister said Zillur Rahman, a language movement veteran, has played an important role in organising the War of Liberation, movement against military rulers in 1962, Six-point Movement in 1966 and Mass Upsurge in 1969.

Particularly, he played the role as a key figure in consolidating the Awami League’s unity since the brutal killing of Bangabandhu on the fateful night of August 15, 1975, she said.

The Prime Minister recalled his contributions to the movement for restoration of democracy in the country and in the struggle for the nation to build a happy and prosperous Sonar Bangla as dreamt by Bangabandhu.

Sheikh Hasina said the nation has lost an honest, dedicated and popular politician at his death.

The Prime Minister prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul of President Zillur Rahman and conveyed profound sympathy to the members of the bereaved family.
