Raising a question about Khaleda Zia’s patriotism, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday said if BNP is voted to power the opposition leader would open a new ‘Hawa Bhaban’ and start a new era of corruption and looting in the country.
“The people of the country do not want to bring back Hawa Bhaban,” she said.
The Prime Minister was addressing a mammoth public rally organised by the local unit of Awami League at Shaheed Manju Stadium at Araihazar.
Referring to opposition leader’s announcement to run the country in a new style if voted to power, Sheikh Hasina said, “BNP would initiate a new style of politics of vengeance, corruption, militancy and terrorism like its previous tenure (2001-2006) if it returns to power.”
Araihazar uazila AL president alhaj Shahjalal Miah presided over the meeting. Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, AL general secretary and LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam, local MP Nazrul Islam Babu, PM’s adviser Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, State Minister for Power Enamul Huq, State Minister for Primary Education Motahar Hossain, Subid Ali Bhuiyan MP, Golam Dastagir Gazi, MP, Nasim Osman, MP, AL organising secretary Ahmed Hossain and AL central leader Enamul Huq Shamim, among others, addressed the meeting.
Describing her government’s development activities across the country, the premier urged the people of the country to cast votes for Awami League in the next election to finish the ongoing development works of the country.
Turning to the opposition, Hasina said the opposition has gone crazy to go to power at any cost. “BNP is now siding with Jamaat and Hefazat for going to power.
“It (BNP) has gone mad to protect the war criminals. Country’s development will get stalled if BNP and its allies — Jamaat and Hefajat — come to power,” the Prime Minister told the rally.
Sheikh Hasina asserted that the trial of war criminals will be held on Bangladesh’s soil and BNP will not be able to protect them as they had failed to protect the killers of Bangabandhu.
“If BNP comes to power again, they’ll start making attacks on political opponents, minorities and carrying out repression on women”, she said.
Hasina said the leader of the opposition has already given a threat to stop all development programmes taken by the current government if they come to power.
The Prime Minister also sharply criticized the opposition leader for her article in the Washington Post where she requested the USA to cancel the GSP facility for Bangladesh.
She said that her government has undertaken numerous development programmes for the balanced development of the country which are still going on. ”Some of our development programmes are going on and I seek your support in the next general election to complete those.”
Reaffirming her government’s firm stance against illegal drugs, Hasina urged all to hand over the drug peddlers to the police for their punishment.
“I’ll request you all to hand over the illegal drug traders to the law enforcement agencies and I assure you we’ll ensure their stringent punishment,” she said.
Hasina said the country has to be free from illegal drugs and urged the guardians and the imams of mosques to create awareness about the dark side of taking drugs.
The Prim Minister urged all to take effective steps to refrain the youths from taking drugs and asked requested all including government officials, law enforcing agencies and other concerned to take their stance against drugs.
Without mentioning anyone’s name, Hasina taking drugs may lead a youth to the edge of darkness and could make a person crazy to kill even one’s parents. “This is a sin…nothing else could be worse than this,” she said.
