Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said the people of the country would not accept any ‘imprudent’ move by the government to relocate the grave of former president, Ziaur Rahman, from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar to elsewhere.
Fakhrul came up with the remark while talking to journalists on the burial premises of Zia, the founder of BNP, after placing wreaths and offering fateha with the leaders and activists of Jatyiatabadi Muktijuddher Projanma. They all were marking JMP’s 20th founding anniversary.
The BNP secretary general said the government in a well-planned manner is trying to destroy legacies of the key heroes of the War of Independence, particularly the proclaimer of Bangladesh’s independence.
He said such a move would never be successful as the name of Ziaur Rahman was deeply carved in the hearts of Bangladeshi people.
While responding to a reporter, Fakhrul said they knew that the incumbent Election Commission was incompetent to hold fair elections but BNP was contesting Narayanganj City Corporation polls to keep up continuation of democracy and organise the people.
He told a reporter that the government was ‘trying to de-politicise Bangladesh’ maintaining a policy that was adopted by the previous army-backed caretaker government.
He said the government was conspiring to keep BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia off politics by filing false cases against her and holding quick trials.
Fakhrul said people would thwart all conspiracies.
The government said they would maintain landscape of Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad complex as per the blueprint of world-famous architect, Louis I Kahn.
The blueprint has been brought to Dhaka, paving the way to flatten or relocate ‘unauthorised’ constructions, including the late president’s tomb, from the sprawling complex.
