Opposition BNP on Wednesday warned the government that people will realise their demand for restoration of the caretaker government through a strong street movement defying the government’s repressive acts.

“People have awoken. They’ll realise their caretaker government demand by any means. There’s no time to look backward. Lakhs of people will take to the streets responding to the call of our leader Khaleda Zia and oust this regime,” said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

The BNP spokesman issued the threat at a discussion arranged by the party at the Institution of Engineers, marking BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s ‘jai release day’.

Fakhrul alleged that the government is formulating new laws to snatch people’s democratic rights so that no one can raise their voice against the government and wage movement. “People won’t abide by the law which is enacted to snatch their democratic rights. They’ll defy it.”

Criticising the government for its repressive acts, the BNP leader said the government cannot suppress people by filing ‘false’ cases against BNP leaders and Dr Muhammad Yunus. “We protest the government move to file a case against Dr Yunus.”

He also alleged that the government has completed all necessary preparations to reestablish one-party Baksal rule undercover of democracy.

“The government has understood it very well that they won’t be able to return to power if the election is held under a non-party government. They also know they won’t be spared for their misdeeds if they don’t return to power. So, they want to hold the election under a partisan government to return to power,” the BNP leader said.

Fakhrul mentioned that the government is going to enact a new law with a provision of seeking permission 10 days before staging any rally or procession. The law will have a provision that anyone accused of damaging any vehicle will have to suffer jail for 7-14 years.

The BNP acting secretary general also alleged that the government is going to formulate a broadcast policy to establish its control over media. “We also protest such move.”

BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said the Prime Minister has changed her mind about not joining the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in the face of criticisms and protests.

He said the revised decision of attending the UNGA has exposed her government’s sordid state. “It’s not difficult for us to understand that they aren’t in a good position.”

Mosharraf said the way she has changed her decision overnight about joining the UNGA, she will have to bow down similarly to people’s demand for arranging the next polls under a non-party government changing her current decision of holing it under her administration.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will attend the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) although there have been reports that she would not attend it.

“The Prime Minister will attend the 68th Session of the UNGA and deliver her speech in Bangla,” PM’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad told UNB on Tuesday night.

Earlier on Monday, different media reported that the Prime Minister has decided not to attend the UNGA meeting to be held later this month in New York.

BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas said a quarter within BNP is active to push BNP into trouble by making the party take part in the election under a party government.

He warned the party leaders and activists to remain alert so that the vested quarter cannot harm the party like it did during 2007.   “We’ve forgiven them in the past and reestablished them. But there’s no guarantee that they won’t launch any attack again.”

BNP standing committee member Hannan Shah, Nazrul Islam Khan, vice chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka, joint secretaries general Aman Ullah Aman, Mahbubuddin Khokan, ex-VC of Dhaka University Prof Emajuddin Ahmed and Dhaka University Prof Mahbubullah, among others, spoke at the programme.
