People fed up with blockades: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Tuesday said country’s people are fed up with blockades sponsored by the BNP-led opposition alliance one after another.

“People are fed up because of long blockades. People are irritated with the programmes. I hope good sense will prevail among them (the opposition) regarding this,” he told reporters while leaving his office of the Election Commission secretariat in the evening.

He also hoped that there will be no involvement of the people in the indefinite blockade of the opposition beginning at 6am Wednesday.

Replying to a query as to whether there is any confusion over the January 5 election, the CEC said, “What confusion is it? There is nothing to have confusion when election is going to be held.”

Turning to the ongoing violence, Rakibuddin said the killings and attacks are unexpected. “Those who carry out such killings and attacks are not men of any political party, rather they are miscreants. Miscreants are not members of any party.”

Law enforcement agencies are conducting drives to recover illegal arms and the situation is improving gradually following the drives, he added.

About his meeting with Awami League delegation, he said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as the chief of a political party will have to carry out electioneering complying with the law. The premier’s state programme is different from election campaign programme. She can seek votes in her campaign programmes.
