Over 1100 nomination papers submitted

Single in seven constituencies

 

Over 1100 candidates submitted their nomination papers across the country within the deadline to contest the 10th parliamentary elections slated for January 5 next.

 

According to a primary account of the Election Commission secretariat, a total of 1,107 aspirants submitted their nomination papers as the deadline expired on Monday.

 

Of them, seven constituencies –Lalmonirhat-2, Manikganj-2, Kishoreganj-2, Tangail-3, Chandpur-1, Noakhali-2 and Molvibazar-4 – received single nomination paper each.

 

Aspirants of 15 registered political parties out of 40 filed nomination papers to contest the election to be held under ruling Awami League-led interim cabinet.

 

About the nomination submission, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin

Ahmad on Monday night said that the list of nomination papers will be uploaded on the Election Commission website after the crosschecking of the names of the aspirants.

 

Replying to a query, he, however, told reporters at the EC secretariat that no candidate placed nomination paper under the banner of opposition BNP.

 

The 15 parties are Awami League, Jatiya Party (Ershad), Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Workers’ Party of Bangladesh, Jatiya Party-JP, Bangladesh Nationalist Front (BNF),

Bangladesh Jatiya Party, Bangladesh Jatiya Party-BJP, Islamic Front Bangladesh, Khelafat Majlish, Ganofront, Bangladesh Islamic Front, Tarikat Federation, National Awami Party and Khelafat Majlish.

 

In the last national election in 2008, a total of 38 registered political parties joined are participating in the election, and some 2200 aspirants submitted their nomination papers. Finally, 1567 candidate contested the election after scrutiny of nomination papers.

 

In the 1996 February one-party national election, 1450 candidate contested the election.

 

CEC Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed on November 25 announced the schedule for the country’s 10th general election amid BNP’s threat of boycott.

 

According to the schedule, the nomination papers will be scrutinised on December 5 and 6. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is December 13.
