Deposed military dictator HM Ershad has urged the people to elect his party to power, claiming only the Jatiya Party can ensure good governance in Bangladesh.
He made the call at the biannual council of the party’s Barisal Metropolitan unit on Monday.
“People want to be free from the clutches of ill-governance by the two parties… they want change,” he said in an obvious reference to the Awami League and the BNP.
“Only the Jatiya Party can make them free by changing the way the state is run,” said Ershad.
The former military strongman was toppled in the early ‘90s through a mass movement led by the Awami League and the BNP, parties that have alternately held state power since.
But Ershad’s party emerged as the main opposition in the 2014 polls boycotted by the BNP.
His party has stakes in the government, while he has been made a special envoy to the prime minister.
