The attacks took place on Sunday morning at Alokbali Uttarparha village under Alokbali Union, a remote shoal area, at Sadar Upazila in the district, police said.

The deceased was identified as Liakat Ali, 65, a ruling party activist.

Khorshed Mia, 55, an opposition supporter, who sustained bullet injuries, was sent to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.

Liakat was the father of Alokbali Union Juba League unit President Billal Hossain.

Locals said there had been a long-time bad blood between two local leaders of the rival parties – Awami League’s ‘Shaheb Member’ and BNP’s ‘Mizan Member’.

Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Asaduzzaman told reporters that supporters of ‘Shaheb Member’ shot Khorshed Mia, a supporter of ‘Mizan Member’ in the morning during a heated argument.

Khorshed was first admitted to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital and then sent to DMCH.

After a rumour spread in the area that Khorshed had died, BNP activists attacked houses of Awami League supporters at noon.

OC Asaduzzaman said Liakat was stabbed to death at the time.

The areas were tense after the attacks and counter-attacks, he said, adding that additional police force was deployed there to avert any further unpleasant incidents.

A case was likely to be filed on Sunday night, according to him.
