Non-students, married get JCD berth

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Tuesday approved the new committee formed ‘to invigorate the anti-government movement’.

But a section of the party leaders and activists took out marches on Wednesday in front of BNP office in a show of rejection.

BNP Student Affairs Secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie announced the names of 153 of the 201-member committee.

When Khaleda sat with JCD leaders several times before formation of the new body, there was speculation that the married people mught be excluded.

The average age of the new committee members dropped from those of the previous committee, but the age of several leaders including the president and general secretary remained above 35 years.

Sources said studentship of most of the committee members ended long ago but they got admitted to private universities to preserve their student identities.

The committee has one, who along with Bangladesh Chhatra League men, had beaten JCD activists.

New Vice-President Niaz Makhdum Masum Billah was convicted for BUET student Sabekun Nahar Sony murder. Married Billah was an assistant general secretary in the previous committee.

Publicity Secretary Mahmudul Islam Himel is an accused in the murder of a private medical college student at Dhaka University’s SM Hall.

New Assistant General Secretary Ashraf Faruqui Hira was allegedly involved in drug trade on the DU campus.

JCD President Rajib Ahsan enrolled to Dhaka University’s Department of Public Administration in 1994-95 session. According to his academic documents, he is now more than 35 years old.

Ahsan, hailing from Barisal, was JCD’s central committee publicity secretary when he was Kobi Jasim Uddin Hall unit president.

A section of JCD leaders allege Ahsan, loyal to the organisation’s former chief Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, was inactive during the state of emergency in 2007-08 and during BNP’s agitations before the Jan 5 parliamentary elections.

Mamunur Rashid Mamun, a Dhaka University student hailing from Noakhali, was vying for the top JCD post but did not succeed. However, he has been made vice-president-1. Manun got admitted to Dhaka University in 1996-97 session.

New committee General Secretary Akramul Hasan secured admission to Dhaka University in 1996-97. He was a joint-general secretary in the previous committee.

Studentship of new Organising Secretary Ishaq Sarker, who studied in the Dhaka Alia Madrasa, had ended long ago. Sarkar, married, is the most senior leader on the committee.

New Vice-President Mohidul Hasan Hiru was previously a Chhatra League leader.

When he was the BCL president in the Dhunot College unit, a group led by him had attacked a JCD procession. He was admitted to the Dhaka University’s Urdu Department in the 1999-2000 session.

Father of two

New Vice-President Ejmal Hossain Pilot is the father of two children. He was admitted to Dhaka University in 1997-98.

Another Vice-President, Nihar Hossain Faruque, has been a lawyer for last 15 years. Married Faruque was JCD law affairs secretary in the previous committee.

The new married JCD leaders also include Vice-Presidents Faisal Ahmed, Masud Khan Parvez, Masum Billah, Abdul Wahab, Ishtiaq Nasir, Khaliliur Rahman Khalil and Safayat Hossain Ripon.

Also married are Abu Atique Al Hasan Mintu, Zakir Hossain Khan, Zakir Hossain Mintu, Joydeb Joy, Yasin Ferdous Murad, Anwarul Karim Milion and Monira Akter Rikta, Joint General Secretary Mia Mohammad Russell, Abdul Karim Sarker and Shah Nasiruddin Rummon, Assistant General Secretary Ehteshamul Haq and Islamil Hossain Khan and Assistant Organising Secretary AKM Shafique Islam.

Reactions

A section of JCD activists took out a march in front of the BNP office at Naya Paltan protesting against the constitution of the committee.

The agitators said qualifications of many were ignored due to personal preferences.

Annie did not pick up calls when bdnews24.com tried to reach him to get his version regarding the allegations.
