No polls without CG, reaffirms BNP

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday reaffirmed that the opposition will not join the next election unless the government creates a level-playing filed making an arrangement to hold the polls under a non-partisan administration.

“BNP will surely go to polls if a level-playing field is created… It’s beyond doubt that no election will be held in the country without caretaker government. BNP won’t take part in the polls if a level-playing field is not created,” he said.

Fakhrul came up with the remarks while addressing a roundtable titled ‘Development Thoughts of BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman and future Bangladesh’ at a city hotel.

He alleged that the government resorted to repressive acts to subdue the opposition losing earth beneath its feet.

“The government is enacting a new law to impose a ban on holding rallies and public gatherings. It exposed how an old political party like Awami League has become politically bankrupt,” Fakhrul observed.

riticising the government for the 15th amendment to the constitution, the BNP leader said the current regime keeps on sitting on the nation’s shoulder like a heavy stone. People are now waiting to erupt like volcano against the regime. No one will be able to resist the spark of people.”

Accusing the government of indulging in widespread corruption and looting, the BNP leader said the country’s economy has become stagnant due to their misdeeds. “The ruling party men siphoned off thousands of crore of taka plundering from financial institutions and banks.”

He held the government responsible for suspension of GSP facility to Bangladesh by the US.

Without mentioning any name, the BNP spokesman also put the blame on a government minister for the recent unrest in the RMG sector.

Explaining BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman’s political philosophy, Fakhrul said, ”His philosophy is not to hang onto past and resort to vengeance. Looking forward and taking the country forward are his philosophy.”

He also said following the footstep of his father BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, Tarique also thinks about people’s welfare and dreams of a beautiful future of the country.

“Tarique Rahman has created a distinctive culture in the politics comparing to the present trend of hatred and vindictiveness. He’s our future leader who is showing us dreams. There’s no doubt that we’re going to get a proper leader,” the BNP leader said.

BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Dhaka University teachers Prof Mahbub Ullah, Prof AFM Yusuf Haider and Prof Abu Ahmed, vice-chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, among others, spoke at the programme.
