No mercy for police or informant if found guilty: home minister

The minister for home, Asaduzzaman Khan, on Thursday said no offenders would be spared if they were involved in Wednesday night’s incident in Gudaraghat of Mirpur area where a tea seller caught fire from his kerosene stove reportedly involving a policeman.
His comment came as the tea seller Babul Mattabbar, 45, died at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital on Thursday. The man struggled for hours for survival with almost 95 per cent burn injuries in his body.
Mattabbar suffered burn injuries as a policeman allegedly hit his kerosene stove after he refused to pay toll to him. Because of the impact, the stove exploded and his body caught fire.
The home minister promised justice if any policeman is involved in the incident, reports United News of Bangladesh.
‘We always take action against responsible persons when we can confirm any incidents after inquiry,’ the home minister told reporters when his attention was drawn to Wednesday night’s incident at Tejgaon Adarsha School and College in the city.
‘We do not spare anybody whoever he is—police, police sources or any powerful persons. We will take appropriate steps after inquiry,’ he said.
When asked whether the image of police has been tarnished following some recent incidents, including Wednesday night’s one, the home minister said: ‘Of course not.’
‘I think the image of police has increased in recent days as they are doing well,’ he said.
Earlier, the home minister addressed the annual prize giving ceremony at Tejgaon Adarsha School and College as chief guest.
Director general of Fire Service and Civil Defence Brigadier General Ali Ahmed Khan, chairman of the school’s governing body Md Shafiuallah Shafi and Dibalok Singh also spoke at the function as special guests.
Principal of the school Abdul Mannan chaired the function.
