No escape route to be left for govt when people will hit streets: Abbas

BNP’s Dhaka city unit convener Mirza Abbas on Wednesday said there will be no escape route for the current government when people will take to the streets to realise their demand for holding a fresh election under a non-party administration.

“Most people now here at our rally are conscious people, not our men. People have started waking up. This regime won’t get the escape route when we’ll take to the streets together with people to realise our demand for polls under a non-party administration,” he said.

Abbas, also a BNP standing committee member, was addressing a rally organised by the Dhaka city unit of the 20-party alliance at the Jatiya Press Club protesting the government’s move to re-empower parliament to impeach judges by abolishing the Supreme Judicial Council.

He said the country’s people now want the government to go. “Quit power as per people’s demand. Our movement is on and it’ll continue unless our demand is met.”

Criticising the government for what he said its repressive acts, Abbas said the government alongside killing and making opposition leaders and activists disappeared is also implicating them in ‘false’ cases.

“We want to say that you won’t be able to stop our movement by sending our 5 lakh leaders and activists to jail. You’ll have to go in the face of movement,” he warned.

Defending BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman’s comments in London that Awami League is a party of black sheep and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s killers are now in Sheikh Hasina’s cabinet, Abbas said Tarique divulged the facts from documents.

“What Tarique Rahman said was not his own version. He only quoted some facts from different books and media reports,” the BNP leader added.

He alleged that the ruling party leaders and ministers are attacking BNP senior vice chairman with false and fabricated information. “They’re spreading lies against Tarique. Their comments against him are baseless.”

The former minister claimed that the government has hurriedly taken some moves like formation of the broadcast policy and empowering parliament to impeach judges. “The government is passing a very busy time and trying to implement some moves suddenly.  I don’t know the reason. They can say it. I think they might have realised their days are numbered.”

He also alleged that the government is going to empower parliament to have the authority to impeach judges in a bid to block the path of justice for opposition leaders and activists.
