No crisis over next polls: Suranjit

News - No crisis over next polls: Suranjit
Minister without portfolio and Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta on Thursday said the Election Commission will arrange the next general election and there is no ‘crisis’ in the country over it.

“There was a crisis over holding parliamentary elections in the past…now there’s no crisis…it’s the Election Commission, not the government, that will arrange the next polls,” he told a discussion in the city.

Boat Supporters Group, a pro-Awami League organisation, arranged the discussion at the Institute of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh protesting the recent ‘propaganda’ of BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman aboard.

Speaking as the chief guest, Suranjit said the Election Commission is going to arrange four city corporation polls and BNP is participating in the elections. “BNP’s participation in the city corporation polls has proved it agrees to take part in next parliamentary elections under the Election Commission.”

He said holding the elections to the four city corporations will be an acid test for the Election Commission whether it can arrange acceptable polls or not.

About dialogue, Suranjit said BNP has no example of reaching a consensus through dialogue.

About a recent judgment of the High Court, Suranjit said BNP leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed had made a statement at the court that Major Ziaur Rahman killed Col Taher cool-headedly in the name of tribunal.

Awami League leaders Haji M Selim and Humayun Kabir Migi, among others, spoke at the discussion.
