The government will not compromise or sit in talks with those who celebrate birthdays on the National Mourning Day, the Awami League Spokesperson has said hinting at opposition leader Khaleda Zia’s birthday bash on Aug15.
“What talks with whom? Talks with them are not possible, neither is any compromise,” Syed Ashraful Islam said in the presence of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at a function on Friday observing the death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
BNP Chairperson celebrated her 69th birthday by cutting cakes in her party office on Thursday. The three-time Prime Minister has been roundly criticised for celebrating on a day when Father of the Nation Bangabandhu was assassinated with most of his family members in 1975.
She has been observing day since 1991 when she became the Prime Minister for the first time.
Amid standoff between the two major political parties — the Awami League and the BNP — over the next general elections, several Western quarters are stressing talks to end the confrontation.
Khaleda, while exchanging Eid greetings with party leaders and activists on Friday, promised not to launch anti-government movements if her demand for the restoration of the caretaker provision in the Constitution was met.
Several senior BNP leaders have also urged the government ‘to come to a compromise’.
Syed Ashraf, also the LGRD minister, ruled out such possibilities on Friday, saying, “Sheikh Hasina will never meet the demands of those who get indulge in fun (on a day when Bangabandhu was killed).”
Ashraf urged the people to trust Hasina in governing the country and said, “Don’t listen to rumours. If you have that trust, we will be able to implement everything.”
He also strongly criticised certain foreign consulates for ‘interfering’ in Bangaldesh’s internal affairs.
“Those who give us advice did not issue any statement over Khaleda Zia’s birthday. I talk to the ambassadors regularly. I know what they want,” he added.
