National Martyrs’ Memorial architect dies

Born in 1952, Moinul graduated in Architecture from BUET

Syed Moinul Hossain, the famed architect of the National Martyrs’ Memorial at Savar, died on Monday. He was 63.

The renowned architect died at 2:35pm at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in the capital.

Moinul was admitted to the hospital on Sunday.

resident Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia expressed their deep shock at the death of Moinul Hossain.

Moinul Hossain’s design proposal was selected among the fifty-seven competitors in a national competition for the design of the National Martyrs’ Memorial in June 1978.

The national monument was set up at Savar, on the outskirts of the capital of Dhaka, to symbolise the valour and sacrifice of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971.

Born in 1952, Moinul graduated in Architecture from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

He did designs of some 38 large establishments from 1976 to 1998.

In 1987, Moinul was awarded Ekushey Padak, one of the highest civilian awards in Bangladesh, for his outstanding contribution to the country.
