Nation wants PM to resign: BNP

Its Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told a press conference on Monday that ‘the nation’ would much rather want Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign.

“The only way to avert the current crisis is forming a non-party government. The ministers have submitted resignations. But, the nation is waiting for the Prime Minister’s resignation”, said the BNP leader.

On Monday, ministers submitted their resignations to the PM, during the regular Cabinet meeting, to facilitate the formation of an all-party interim government to oversee the upcoming national poll.

Several other ministers, including Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Minister without Portfolio Suranjit Sengupta, and State Minister for Liberation War Affairs AB Tajul Islam, had already submitted their resignation to the Prime Minister.

The press briefing at the BNP’s Naya Paltan headquarters was held just an hour after the ministers resigned on Monday.

Rizvi said ‘peace and stability’ would return to country if the PM now decides to resign taking ‘cognisance’ of the demand for a non-party poll-time government.

“The Prime Minister had said in a programme yesterday (Sunday) that she is even ready to resign for the sake of peace in the country. The nation is waiting for that.”

He said the BNP wants the PM to resign like the ministers, which would be ‘a step towards a positive path’.

The crisis will not be resolved if the government went ahead with the process of forming an all-party government, said the BNP leader.

“Then we have to understand that these resignations are part of the ‘blue-print’ prepared for the election.”

Rizvi told media persons that the police are stopping BNP activists and leaders from entering the party headquarters.
